Basketball is great.  We all love basketball and it’s officially March Madness, but the weather is finally starting to get better and baseball season is also heating up.

Gonzaga baseball had their home opening series against San Francisco.  USF took the series winning two games, while the Zags only won one.

Gonzaga won the first game of the series 7-0.  Pitcher Brandon Bailey had a strong outing.  He gave up seven hits, but he had an impressive nine strikeouts and only walked one batter.  Third baseman Mitchell Gunsolus went 2-4 and had two RBI.  Cather Joey Harris also hit well, going 2-3 with an RBI.  The Dons also helped the Zags out with two errors.  Even though the Zags scored seven runs, the pitching and fielding was really the highlight.

San Francisco took game two winning 2-0.  The Dons gave the Zags a taste of their own medicine in this game.  Gonzaga had seven hits, but no scoring.  San Francisco first baseman, Brendan Hendirks went 2-4 and had an RBI.  Designated hitter, Manny Ramirez Jr. (who is the son of MLB  great Manny Ramirez) went 2-3 and had an RBI as well.

The third game of the series was scheduled for Sunday, March 15, but the game was delayed due to rain.  It rained all day in Spokane and the game ended up being played on Monday.  San Francisco won this rubber match 4-3.  It was a tight battle and the score was 3-3 until the Dons scored in the top of the ninth inning.  Gonzaga center fielder, Sam Brown went 2-4 with an RBI.  San Francisco center fielder, Derek Atkinson went 2-4 with three RBI.

These game were exciting and conference play is just getting started.  Gonzaga will continue to play at home.  They will have a three game series against BYU starting on Thursday, March 19.  The Dons will return home to take on Cal for one game.
