Saint Mary’s Blows Out San Francisco 84-53
By Mary Harvill
San Francisco could do little to stop Saint Mary’s Gaels in War Memorial Gym as Saint Mary’s cruised to an easy victory over the Dons at home by a score of 84-53 ending the Don’s 3 game winning streak.
USF couldn’t buy a basket in the first half as Saint Mary’s hit three point shot after three point shot. The Dons went into halftime with a 20 point deficit. The second half showed better production by USF but not enough to fill the first half crater. Garrett Jackson led Saint Mary’s with 26 points and made 4 out of 5 three point shots. Brad Waldow though quiet in the scoring department in the first half, roared back and closed out the game with 18 points and 7 rebounds. Kerry Carter had 18 points as well with 6 rebounds. No worries for the Gaels in this game.
The Dons were led by Tim Derksen with 12 points. Kruize Pinkins did not contribute a huge amount of points in the game, 8 to be exact, but did collect 10 rebounds. Chris Adams sunk two 3 point shots that gave the team a lift in those moments ending the evening with 6 points. Mark Tollefsen had 8 points; Devin Watson 9 points. Not a great night for anybody.

For all intents and purposes, this was a largely forgettable game. Both teams cleared the bench for the last 2 minutes of the game giving us a look at everybody else on each team for a brief stretch. Even the play by play announcers stopped the detailed descriptions as the game clock wound down.
Pacific coming off their win over Santa Clara on Thursday will present a challenge to USF (if they choose to accept it) on Saturday night. Saint Mary’s will meet Santa Clara for their final regular season game.
Then it is off to Vegas to spin the roulette wheel and see how far each team can advance in the WCC Championship tournament.
