Game 2 Notes: Gulf Coast Showcase Opening Round

Notre Dame de Namur (Division 2)

The Argos are winless so far this season after falling to #14 Western Washington and Northwest Nazarene. However, during their exhibition play they took on the San Jose State Spartans. Granted this was an exhibition game, the Argonauts led SJSU by as many as 7 points including a halftime lead. Ultimately, the Spartans prevailed, 65-58.

So far this season NDNU has struggled early and has fallen behind opponents during the first half.  On the bright side, Argos Sophomore Jalen Young has scored 54 points through two games. His 25 point Opening Night was quickly followed up by a 29 point night against Northwest Nazarene.

Even though this game is not being played in Southwest Florida, this matchup is part of the 2014 Gulf Coast Showcase. This Opening Round game will be joined by four other games involving opponents that will meet in Florida. Other Opening Round games include East Carolina hosting North Carolina Wesleyan, Green Bay hosting Illinois-Springfield, Fresno State hosting Bristol and Hawaii hosting Hawaii-Hilo (Florida Gulf Coast, Evansville and Marist will not host an Opening Round game). After these match ups, participating teams will travel to Estero, FL to start competition on Thanksgiving week.

San Francisco

This is the final tune up game before San Francisco’s first test as they attempt to take the Gulf Coast Showcase crown. Any Green & Gold players that did not receive enough reps during the Opening Night game will have an opportunity to get some action tonight. This Opening Round matchup will also give the Dons starting five another shot to play in full speed tempo and build on the confidence gained on Sunday.

The Dons are hoping to bring the Gulf Coast Showcase hardware home next week as they still look to prove that last year was not a fluke.

Prediction

Everyone on the USF roster gets minutes. Notre Dame de Namur’s Jalen Young is contained and the Dons score 100 points as they win by more that 35 points.
