Dalton Nixon, a 6-foot-7 forward from Orem, Utah, was originally supposed to serve a two-year LDS mission before enrolling at BYU in the 2016-2017 season.

Change of plans. Nixon will delay his mission by a year and play for the Cougars in the upcoming season.

Nixon, a product of Orem High School, averaged 20.2 points and 8.9 rebounds his senior year and 17.5 points and 8.5 rebounds his junior year. Nixon can shoot from about any (reasonable) spot on the court and can rebound as well.

In the short-term, this is very good news for BYU. The Cougars are short in the frontcourt, and adding another body will only make things better for the Cougars.  Before Jamal Aytes is eligible, BYU only boasts Josh Sharp, Nate Austin, Ryan Andrus and Luke Worthington as its bigs, all limited offensive weapons. Adding Nixon will give BYU’s frontcourt an added dimension.

However, there is a problem that BYU has with Nixon’s addition. With the addition of Nixon, the BYU is now at 14 scholarships for 2014, one over the limit. The most feasible resolution to this problem would be for Nixon to pay his way his freshman year. Kyle Davis, a transfer for Utah State, is doing the same thing.

It could also mean a player is out the door at BYU. We will keep you up-to-date with any developments, either on the website or by twitter (@westcoastconvo).
