Fun With Numbers: 2013-2014 Saint Mary’s Gaels Edition! (Part 2)

Waldow’s return will be huge for the Gaels next year (courtesy of Andrew Nguyen).
Here is a screenshot of the individual stats of the Gaels from this past season (found here: http://www.teamrankings.com/ncaaAll Pages-basketball/team/st-marys-gaels/roster)
Stats
First of all, there are 200 minutes for each team per game, plus overtime (that’s why the Gaels averaged a little more than 200 minutes). Of the 200 game minutes, 117.11 were played by Seniors, and that takes into account the whole season. In the last few games, Paul McCoy had a lot more minutes than Jordan Giusti, and if pro-rated for the entire year, the average would be a lot higher. In short: the Gaels will need to replace not just 6 seniors, but 58.5% of total game minutes. That is a lot of playing time for a lot of new guys (but that is for another post).
Those six seniors also averaged 41.2 points per game, which is roughly 57.6% of all scoring. Considering Holt, Levesque and Walker III averaged 34.2 points by themselves, and considering the Gaels should have scored more points (from the 1st part) and all of the sudden, you are looking at a lot of playing time and a lot of points coming in for the new guys.
The good news is that Brad Waldow will be back, and I think that he can certainly improve upon his 15.11 ppg and 7.46 rebounds per game. It might be far fetched, but I think he can get up to 17/8.5 and be a real dominant force down low.
For the returning guys, Jordan Giusti, Kerry Carter, and Garrett Jackson simply have to be better scorers. With an influx of new guys coming in, it is the returning guys who need to set the bar high on the court and take charge of the offense.
