It’s always difficult when you are given the challenge to escape your older sibling’s shadow – especially when your brother played in the NBA. However, I’m sure many readers do not associate Cole Dickerson as the brother of former NBA first round pick Michael Dickerson. Instead, Cole took that challenge to Aim Higher and find his own path to success using his brother’s hard work and determination as a trusty template. Fast forward to today, WCC fans recognize Cole as the heartbeat and leader within a San Francisco Dons program that is steadily marching it’s way back to the top.
Just before Cole’s USF career began, the Dons had finished a 2009-2010 campaign with a 12-18 record. Not only did the Dons sport a .400 winning percentage, but they also finished a whopping five games out of first place in the WCC. Since that season, with Cole proudly wearing the Green & Gold, the Dons have played in three different postseason tournaments and have consistently found themselves in the top half of the WCC each season.
Dickerson’s career at the Hilltop symbolizes a change of demeanor and attitude for the San Francisco Dons program within the West Coast Conference. During this four year span, the Dons mens basketball team has surpassed a middle of the pack mentality and climbed to top contender status in the WCC. Yes, there may have been many other players during this time period, but Cole played ball during an important transitional period. During this time many quality teammates came and went, transferring out of the program in order to pursue different opportunities. In a time period with rampant NCAA transfers and changes, Cole stood as a constant for USF. Dickerson gave Dons fans his best Iron Man impression and reminded me of Cal Ripken Jr. – a guy that wouldn’t stop or quit. During Dickerson’s career, he was a selected as a two-time All-WCC first team selection and led the Dons in scoring his junior in senior year. He finished his Dons career as the 11th all-time rebounder in school history and and 19th leading scorer of all-time. He finished his career with 65 consecutive starts. He graduated in May and will leave the Hilltop as a student, but will always be a Don.
At the end of the 2014 WCC Tournament, coach Rex Walters mentioned that he has already invited Cole, as he does with all of his alumni players, to return to the 2015 tournament to fully appreciate his legacy. Even though he may not be suited up for the Green and Gold during the tournament, he is welcome to enjoy the impact of his efforts on the court. We all wish Cole the best and expect nothing but great things in his future. On to Victory!
