It was an up and down year for the junior point guard; Carlino started the season in the starting line up, but after a four-game losing skid in December, Coach Rose called on Carlino to come off the bench. Amidst the myriad of public opinions on the polarizing point guard and the #freecarlino hashtags, Matty Basketball (so says Seth Greenberg) showed a new found poise and discipline. Sure, he always has been and always will be a fan of the heat check; however, he improved his play across the board. Assists went up and turnovers went down. The number of head scratching shots and plays decreased. All the while, the same wild gunslinger style would make an appearance when Carlino would call upon it. In the end, he averaged 13.7 points and 4.3 assists per game.
This will be the last time his name will grace the West Coast Convo rankings, as Carlino will soon graduate and transfer to play elsewhere as a senior. His destination is yet to be determined.
