While it will not be confirmed until the school announces he signed his national letter of intent, reports are indicating that Lithuanian Forward Domantas Sabonis is a “done deal” to Gonzaga.

If the name sounds familiar to you, it’s probably because it is. Domantas is the son of former Portland Trail Blazer great Arvydas Sabonis, and will allegedly take his talents to the United States and attempt to play in the NBA – just like his father.

Currently Sabonis plays for Unicaja Malaga, a professional team in Spain. As a 17-year-old, the Lithuanian native does not play a whole lot, but that is to be expected with such a young player. Sabonis has been in the organization for two seasons, and is averaging 2.6 points and 1.6 rebounds in roughly nine minutes of action this season.

Sabonis has really opened eyes on the international circuit, playing against people his own age. At the U18 European Championships this past summer, Sabonis averaged 14.0 points and 11.4 rebounds for team Lithuania and led his home country to fifth place, finishing behind Croatia, Latvia, Turkey and Spain. He led all players in the tournament in rebounding and finished eighth in scoring.

Two years ago it was Przemek Karnowski who enticed Gonzaga fans as a European prospect with high upside, and now Sabonis is reportedly filling that roll this year. While this is far from being official, this is exciting news for Gonzaga fans. Sabonis’ name has been on the Gonzaga radar for quite some time, and it is reassuring for the school for this to potentially come into fruition.

More on Sabonis to come on the site when more is known.
