A rough swing through San Diego and Provo has left the Gaels at-large hopes in shatters. While a road loss to BYU isn’t a bad loss, blowing a 14 point lead on the heels of a lackluster performance at the Slim Gym leaves Saint Mary’s fans in complete pessimism with regards to March Madness. The Gaels 4 losses in the West Coast Conference equates to the same number of losses they had in the previous two years combined. What’s worse, of the four conference losses in the previous two years, three came against Gonzaga (the other being LMU). In getting to the tournament in back to back years, Saint Mary’s was able to get good wins and avoid bad losses in conference play. This year, however, the Gaels have not been their usual selves. It looks like the only hope they have is to regroup and play the best basketball of the year leading up to the conference tournament in Las Vegas, where anyone can win it and secure the auto-bid.
