Dons Notes: San Francisco to Start Official Practices

It’s that time of the year again and fans couldn’t be more excited for the new season to finally arrive. Earlier this week, coach Rex Walters announced via Twitter that the Dons will suit up for their first official practice of the 2013-2014 campaign.

This year marks the earliest the NCAA teams will take the court for an official practice. In years past, men’s basketball teams could not take an official practice until four weeks prior to tip-off. During the off-season, the NCAA’s Legislative Council amended these rules and made it possible for men’s basketball to start practice six weeks prior to tip-off. This new measure allows teams to schedule off days during practice weeks. Women’s basketball will remain at its regular 40 day regulation.

Fans looking to grab their first peek of Dons should have October 19th marked on their calendars. That will be the 2nd annual Hilltop Hoopsfest at War Memorial Gym. Last year, the event included a short scrimmage, dunk contest, and even a dance-off with the Lady Dons. Mark Tollefsen took the dunking honors and would be my bet as repeat champion.

One For The Road

USF is preparing for the new athletic season. Here was a video the USF Athletic Department released before the academic year started. Not enough is said of the terrific work of USF Video Director, Katie Morgan. I always look forward to her work.
