Pepperdine landed a commitment from three star center Nate Gehring from Waukee, Iowa. The Waukee High School big man pledged to the Waves late last night, making him the first 2014 commit for Marty Wilson and his staff. Pepperdine beat out a handful of schools for Gehrings services, which include: Kent State, Nevada, South Dakota, Indiana State, Oakland, Northern Colorado, Nebraska-Omaha, Drake, Albany, North Dakota, and South Dakota State. Georgia Tech, Iowa, Northern Iowa, Lehigh, Creighton, and Iowa State were all showing interest in Gehring.
By looking at the list of schools pursuing Gehring, it is evident that he is a big-time recruit for Pepperdine. The Waves have not been relevant in the WCC for a long time, but things are looking up in recruiting. If Marty Wilson can establish a stellar 2014 recruiting class to proceed the solid 2013 class that he brought in, the Waves could be dangerous down the road.
The 6-10, 220 pound center has a very solid post game. He is not explosive, but his post games are smooth and uses his body well to finish around the basket. Gehring is also an able passer from the post, and can hit open teammates if the defense focuses on him.
Gehring is a great get for Marty Wilson and his staff. With the WCC growing rapidly from a talent standpoint, the Waves need the horses to keep up. Gehring could be a force in the WCC moving forward because of his size and skill set. Wilson and his staff will now need to hit the recruiting trail and find pieces to fit around Gehring.
