No. 3- Randy Bennett (Saint Mary’s)

By Simon Tryzna (Twitter Handle: @SimonTryzna)

What Randy Bennett has done at Saint Mary’s given the facilities and the resources is remarkable. Bennett recruits hard working student athletes with character who are successful in the classroom as they are on the basketball court. He does that despite having what has to be one of the tiniest D-1 weight rooms and a very small gym.  Although his non-conference scheduling is constantly questioned by the Gael faithful and college hoops junkies alike, Bennett has had 4 teams in the last 6 years make the NCAA tournament, with the other two having enough reason to feel like they deserved to be in the Big Dance. Ultimately, Randy Bennett put Saint Mary’s on the map which has increased the applicants Saint Mary’s receives. Due to the success of the basketball teams, there is great pride in being a Gael. Finally, Bennett’s addition of Marty Clarke and Jim Shaw to his coaching staff should allow Saint Mary’s to continue to compete for championships in WCC and to be a perennial Top 25 team.
