Anyone else remember a 6’7″, dual sport athlete that was recruited extremely heavily by the Bulldogs? That person would be Denver Broncos Quarterback Brock Osweiler, who elected to play football at Arizona State, despite verbally committing to Gonzaga for basketball in the summer going into his sophomore year of high school. Reid Tarvis, a four star basketball prospect, is being recruited as a forward in basketball and a quarterback in football. Mark Few and his staff are not planning on repeating the past, and hoping on not only convincing Travis that basketball is his true calling, but that Spokane is the right place for him as well.
Who is Reid Travis?
Reid Travis is a 6’7, 235 Power Forward/Small Forward (depending on the site) from Minneapolis, Minnesota. He holds offers from 25 schools according to 247 sports. Those schools include Gonzaga, Harvard, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, and Stanford among others. He is a fantastic student in the classroom, and by the looks of his top schools, he is looking to go to a University for academics and not just their basketball program.
As alluded to before, Travis is a fantastic football player in addition to being a great basketball player. He has scholarship offers from Boston College, Iowa, and Rutgers to play Quarterback for their respective football teams. Travis has not decided yet whether sport he will pursue to play in college, and according to this article by the Star Tribune, he will make his decision by the end of the summer.
Scouting Report
If Reid Travis were a canine, he would be a Bulldog (see what I did there). He is a phenomenal rebounder and uses his long and lanky frame to his advantage. Travis has a 15 foot jumper in his arsenal, that he uses quite frequently. His post up game is not fluent, but it is overpowering and certainly effective. His offensive game needs some refinement, but Travis is still a double-double machine as it stands.
Travis’s Recruitment
This past weekend, Travis was participating in the National Basketball Players Association top 100 camp, where he was one of the standouts. The following tweets are a testament to that.
While scrolling through my timeline over the weekend, it was impossible to go 20 tweets without Travis’s name being mentioned. This is a player whose recruitment is about to blow up, and thankfully for Gonzaga, they have been recruiting him from the get-go. He is going to be visiting Spokane during Hoopfest weekend (June 29-30th).
Gonzaga’s Chances?
247 sports has a feature called “The Crystal Ball” where analysts across the country try to predict where all of the top prospects across the nation are going to commit. Out of 2 predictions for Travis, both Jerry Meyer and Chad Carson have Travis as a Zag. Travis is a guy that Gonzaga has a fantastic chance with. He has expressed his interest in the Gonzaga coaching staff, and Gonzaga’s academic prowess certainly doesn’t hurt either. In the end, I think the Bulldogs will have to compete with Travis’s hometown school, Minnesota, for his services.
This is certainly a player to keep your eye on as the 2014 recruiting year progresses.
