Hi there! My name is Kevin Cacabelos and I’ll be blogging about LMU sports at West Coast Convo. I’m a current student at LMU and the school newspaper’s Sports Editor. I hope I can help enrich the already wealth of content available on this website. I frequently tweet about LMU sports @KevinCacabelos. If you have any post or story ideas always feel free to shoot me a line at kcacabelos@gmail.com. This will hopefully be a weekly post. Here are a few news and notes on the school’s athletic programs:

  • The men’s water polo team added six recruits: Jonathan Beck (Capistrano Valley), Matthew Cuozzo (Mater Dei), Corey McGee (St. Francis), Chris Fiala (Oaks Christian), Max Merriman (Dexter HS – Mich.) and Riley Smith (Santa Margarita HS). You can read more about the class at LMULions.com.
  • Two LMU baseball players were drafted this past weekend, catcher Colton Plaia and starting pitcher Aaron Griffin. The Tampa Bay Rays selected Griffin in the 10th round with the 306th overall pick, while  the New York Mets selected Plaia in the 15th round with the 446th overall pick on Saturday. A report on MLB.com quotes the Rays scouting director R.J. Harrison: “He was the Friday starter at LMU, has had a good college career. Likely a starter early in his career in the Minor Leagues, and then we’ll see what happens from there.”
  • Starting pitcher Patrick McGrath was named the WCC Pitcher of the Month of May last week. See the official press release here.
  • Last but not least, the offseason is here for LMU sports teams. I penned this column awhile back for The Loyolan, summing up the school’s ‘disappointing’ sports school year.
