Opening Round match up between San Diego and Cal Poly was played at Jackie Robinson Stadium in Los Angeles

The Torero’s had a tough outing against the Cal Poly Mustangs in their opening round game. The Mustangs put up 2 runs in the fifth, and 6 in the sixth to pull ahead of the Toreros. In the sixth inning, Allen singled to left to start the inning. After Armendariz grounded into a fielders choice, Stewart singled to right to put runners on first and second for the Mustangs. Toreros starting pitcher PJ Conlon then walked John Schuknecht to load the bases. Conlon then walked Van Gersen to bring in Armendariz. Conlon was replaced by Michael Wagner, who continued to struggle in relief. On his first pitch, he hit Denver Chavez to bring in yet another run. After Jordan Ellis fouled out, the Mustangs continued to rally despite having two outs. Brian Mundell singled to left field, which brought in two RBI’s. Wagner then walked Nick Torres to yet again load the bases. Jimmy Allen reached base off a single and brought in Mundell and Chavez. At this point, the Torero’s were down 9-2, and they were not able to recover.

Mustang third baseman Jimmy Allen was fantastic game this evening. Allen had 4 hits in 5 at bats. He also had 2 RBI’s on the evening. Catcher Brian Mundell homered to center field in the first inning, the sole home run of the game.

In eight innings of work, Mustangs pitcher Joey Wagman only gave up one earned run. He walked three and struck out three in his efforts on the mound this afternoon.

The stat sheet was not as favorable to the Toreros in this match-up. Superstar slugger Kris Bryant struggled to make any sort of impact in this game. He walked once, struck out once, and flied out to center field. The Golden Spikes semifinalist will need to be more of a factor in their elimination game tomorrow.

The Toreros will take on the loser of the UCLA-San Diego State tomorow at 2 PM PT. From now on, the Torero’s are in a win or go home situation. Any loss will put the Torero’s on the coach watching the rest of the tournament from San Diego.
