It’s that time of year where golf enthusiasts across the world rejoice and the top golfers in the world compete for the heavily desired Green Jacket. Yes, it’s Masters week.

For those who are not acclimated with the golf scene, the Masters is one of the four major golf tournament’s, which takes place in the first full week of April. Out of the four “majors”, the Master’s is first in the calender year. Unlike the other three majors, the Masters takes place at Augusta National Golf Club every single year. The tournament is aggregate scoring, and it spans over the course of four days. The winner of the tournament is awarded a green jacket, one of the several traditions that takes place at the Masters.

This golf tournament is often regarded as the most prestigious event that a professional golfer can play in. BYU Alum and Former Master’s champion Mike Weir is in the field of  players in the 2013 masters.

In 2003, Mike Weir became the first Canadian born player, and left-handed player to win the Masters. Weir finished the tournament at seven under par, and went into a playoff with American golfer Len Mattiace. Fortunately for Weir, he won the playofff, and claimed his first, and only green jacket.

However, before Weir was a Masters champion he was a great golfer at Brighan Young University. In 1992, Weir was named as a second team All-American and WAC player of the year. He also won the John Geersten award, which is awarded to the Cougar golfer with the lowest score average for that season.

After BYU, Weir went on to join the Canadian Professional Golfers Tour, and later on the PGA tour.

Not only is Weir one of the greatest golfers to play at BYU, but in the entire country of Canada. Weir shot an even par 72 on day one of the Master’s, which puts him in great position of making the day two cut.
