On the opening day of the 2014 FIBA World Cup, two WCC players were quintessential to their teams chances today. One players home country got the “W” in the first game of pool play, while the other players country fell to 0-1.

Eugene “Pooh” Jeter, a former star with the Portland Pilots, helped lead Ukraine to victory with a solid performance. In the Ukrainians 72-62 victory over the Dominican Republic, Jeter scored 16 points and dished out two assists in the win.

Jeter, who played a team high 28 minutes for the Ukrainian National Team, is a key part to their success moving forward. Ukraine takes on Finland tomorrow at 7:00 p.m. PST.

Things did not go as well for Matthew Dellavedova and the Australian National Team in their opening round game against Slovenia, with the “Boomers” (the team’s nickname) falling to the Slovenian National Team by a score of 90-80.

Dellavedova played a 29 minutes for the Boomers, scoring three points, grabbing three rebounds and dishing out five assists in the loss. The former Saint Mary’s point guard struggled mightily shooting, going one of seven from the field and one of three from 3-point range.

Australia will have a chance to bounce back from their loss tomorrow, as the Boomers take on Korea at 4:30 a.m. PST.
