WCC NBA Draft Profile: Brendan Lane
By Josh Horton
Brendan Lane only played in the WCC for a season; but that season was one to remember.
Now that Lane has used up all his years of eligibility it is time for him to move on to greener pastures.
What those greener pastures will be, is a mystery. We will sort those out, by recapping how his offseason has gone thus far, what his strengths and weaknesses are and his chances of making an NBA roster.
What has he been up to?
Lane has had workouts with both the Sacramento Kings and the Los Angeles Lakers. The former Pepperdine big man played near Los Angeles for five years while at UCLA and Pepperdine, and Lane is from Rocklin, Calif., which is just about 30 minutes from Sacramento, so Lane is keeping it relatively local.
Other than that, there has not been a ton of information on what Lane has done this offseason, although it looks like he has really been working on his jump shot.
Strengths and Weaknesses
Strengths
+ Shooting
As alluded to before, Lane can really shoot the ball. Lane did not get to show it as much while playing the center position at Pepperdine, but the former Wave shot 37.0 percent from 3-point range his senior season.
+ Defense
This one is pretty obvious. Lane was named the West Coast Conference’s Defensive Player of the Year and averaged 2.4 blocks last season.
+ Size
At about 6-foot-10, Lane has nice height for the power forward position. On top of that, Lane has nice definition and a good body composition.
Weaknesses
– Free Throw Shooting
In his college career, Lane only shot 57.2 percent from the free throw line. Lane will need to improve on that aspect in order to improve his chances of succeeding at the next level.
– Rebounding
Lane was never the most ferocious rebounder, succeeding mostly in his own area. Lane will need to improve on this aspect in order to not be exploited at the next level.
Developing
- Athleticism
Lane never was one to jump out of the gym, but his stint at Pepperdine showed some promise in that aspect. This mostly likely will not be Lane’s Achilles Heel in the draft process.
Chances?
The former WCC Defensive Player of the Year has some nice tools to work with when pitching NBA draft teams to take a chance on him. Will he get drafted? The chances are slim, but Lane could end up on a NBA summer league team and wiggle his way on a roster. The more realistic option for Lane would be playing somewhere overseas.
