USD vs. SMC. Round 2

Last time USD came to Moraga, they got destroyed 81-48 (courtesy of Andrew Nguyen).

This year, Saint Mary’s went into San Diego and flat out had one of their worst games of the year, losing 61-43. The Gaels shot an atrocious 25% from the field while San Diego shot a cool 40% and hit on 7 three pointers (compared to the Gaels’ 1) to take a big win over Saint Mary’s. Since that win,  the Toreros have dropped three straight home games while the Gaels have won at LMU and Pepperdine (after losing at BYU).

The Matchup: Holt & guards vs. Dee & guards: Saint Mary’s needs to shoot the ball better and defend Dee & co. while San Diego needs to slow down penetration and force the Gaels to hit tough three pointers. If San Diego can hold Saint Mary’s to under 20% shooting from beyond the arc, it will be a long night for the home team. While Brad Waldow led the Gaels with 18 points in the last matchup, clearly he is unable to carry the team all by himself. Expect Holt to do whatever it takes to ensure a victory.

The X-Factor: Home Sweet Home. With students back from Jan Term break and the Gaels needing to get on a roll and win all of their remaining games, Gael Force will need to do its part and help carry the team. Last year they played a huge role in the Saint Mary’s blowout win over San Diego.

The Prediction: Paul McCoy, Steven Holt, Jordan Giusti and Brad Waldow all have good games as the Gaels win 70-55.
