Despite a couple of scares, the BYU Cougars (14-9, 6-4) handled the Pacific Tigers with relative ease with an 88 to 78 blank victory.

Tyler Haws once again led the Cougars with 38 points off 12 of 20 shooting. He has been nothing short of phenomenal the last few games. Nothing changed tonight. Along with Haws, Mika scored 20 points, Halford dropped 10 along with Collinsworth to round off the Cougars double-digit scorers.

Matt Carlino led the Cougars in assists with 6. Eric Mika and Nate Austin grabbed 8 rebounds each to lead BYU on the glass.

Pacific was led by senior Tony Gill, who scored 15 points. Andrew Bock was not far behind with 13 points. Gills’s 5 rebounds was a team-high, as was Aaron Short and Bock’s 4 assists.

Keys to the Game Checklist

BYU

(Check) Point Guard Play: Haws stole the show tonight, but from a point guard standpoint Carlino and Collinsworth were not bad. They combined for 11 assists and only 6 turnovers. Carlino did not shoot the ball well but overcame that with his distribution of the basketball. Collinsworth was his all-around good self with 10 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists.

Pacific

(X) Show you belong: The Tigers looked overwhelmed in the Marriott center tonight. They only lost by 10 points tonight, but at times Tigers were down by 20-plus points late in the second half. Pacific was not able to make a statement in this one.

38 points on 12-20 shooting. Enough said.

The Bottom Line

BYU needed a refreshing victory after its treacherous road trip to the Northwest and a matchup with Saint Mary’s on its way.

Pacific, on the other hand, falls to 2-7 in the conference. Their outlook looks extremely bleak at this stage.
