Class of 2014 center Payton Dastrup (Mountain View High School. Mesa, Arizona) has committed to Ohio State over BYU, Virginia, and Florida. The long and rangy post was the Cougars primary target for quite some time, and not landing Dastrup has to sting the Cougar fan base and the coaching staff alike.

Dastrup is a consensus four-star recruit that BYU was hoping would join TJ Haws, Dalton Nixon, Jake Toolson, and Ryan Andrus in a loaded 2014 recruiting class. Unfortunately for the Cougars, that aspiration was shot down today.

As a member of the church of latter-day saints, Dastrup would have fit in well with the lifestyle at BYU. Dastrup also can run the floor pretty well, a trait that would have fit in perfectly with Dave Rose’s high tempo offense.

It is unclear what the BYU coaching staff will do moving forward in recruiting. With no other known offers out to class of 2014 prospects, the best guess is that Dave Rose and his staff will move on and focus on the class of 2015.

The entire college basketball scene should be pretty shocked about this decision. 247 Sports crystal ball on Payton Dastrup was 100% BYU, proclaiming the Cougars as the favorite to land Dastrup. Dastrup surprised fans and experts a like when he decided to Ohio State.
